Mineola ISD Graduation for 2020 - 05/06/2020

Good afternoon everyone,

Yesterday, we received guidance from Governor Abbott and the Texas Education Agency on hosting an outdoor graduation ceremony. We have many guidelines that we are in the process of working on to release later in the week. These guidelines will be focused on safety and the public health of our community.

We will also be filming a Virtual Graduation Ceremony in the event Governor Abbott does have to amend his Re-Opening Texas plan due to an increase in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, etc..

I personally want to thank the Senior Activities and Graduation Committee that has been working very hard over the last two weeks. Plans are coming together very nicely to celebrate the Class of 2020. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments below and I’ll do my best to answer what I can at this time.

My best,
Cody Mize
Superintendent of Schools

Texas schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year - 04/17/2020

Governor Abbott announced today that Texas schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. A committee is already being formed to discuss senior activities, including graduation.

We know these are challenging times for our students, their families, and our community, but we will continue to be flexible, set high expectations, and continually communicate as we provide the best education possible for our students through the end of our school year.

My best,
Cody Mize

Governor Greg Abbott has extended the closure of Texas schools until Monday, May 4th - 03/31/2020

Good afternoon everyone,

Governor Greg Abbott has extended the closure of Texas schools until Monday, May 4th. We are continually evaluating plans to most effectively meet your child’s educational needs during this time. The learning curve has been a lot for all of our students, teachers, parents, and guardians, but as time goes on, we will continue to get better together by remaining flexible, continual communication, and setting high expectations for our kids.

Class of 2020, I want you to personally know that it isn’t over until it is over!!! I know you are anxious about the many events that would take place this spring that are special moments in your life. Your graduation from Mineola High School being the most significant. The plan is still to have graduation on Friday, May 22nd. Other events will be planned accordingly as well.

To all of our students, I would encourage you to not miss the real life education that you are receiving as events unfold. Here are just a few that come to mind:

1.) Change is inevitable, personal growth is optional. Adapting to and overcoming obstacles is something you are going to do for the rest of your life in any career that you choose.

2.) Life really is all about relationships. Develop healthy ones and they will sustain you during the most trying times.

3.) Good still triumphs over evil. All across our state and nation good people are rising up to help others in their time of need. Watch this closely. See how these people lead and serve others. For in due time you and your generation will be called upon to do the same. And when your time comes, lead and serve well.

If we can ever be of service, don’t hesitate to let us know.

My best always,
Cody Mize
Superintendent of Schools

Superintendent Update to the Public - 03/17/2020

Update #5- Tuesday, March 17th at 5:00 p.m.

Good afternoon everyone,

We have several updates to provide you this afternoon. Please help us share the word with individuals throughout our community.

1.) Our school closure will be extended through Friday, April 3rd with a tentative return to school date of Monday, April 6th.

2.) Mineola ISD’s Virtual School will launch on Monday, March 23rd for all students. Students and their parents/guardians may pick up instructional materials and Chromebooks curbside for Middle School, Elementary School, and Primary School Campuses from 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Friday, March 20th at their respective campuses. We will also provide a curbside pick up time on Saturday, March 21st from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. for those that can’t make it on Friday. High School students should already have their individual student issued device.

3.) Campuses and Administration Offices will operate normal business hours starting Monday, March 23rd. Offices will be open to receive phone calls, emails, and schedule individual appointments with administrators if absolutely necessary. Please call or email in advance before stopping by.

4.) Food Distribution will remain on our current schedule that has been released with delivery options available. Please see our previous post.

5.) Expect more information coming from our campuses soon like examples of academic schedules, technology support call centers, virtual teacher hours to provide tutoring and additional academic support, services for our special education students, etc.

Please realize this is going to be a time of trial and error. All of us are going to have to remain flexible as we deal with the significant challenges we are facing. Educating our kids for the future must continue. It is too important not to, whether that be virtually or face to face.

Parents/Guardians and Community Members of Mineola ISD, I want to say thank you for your help in all of this. It is events like this that unite our community and make us even stronger. Our actions today are setting the example for our kids to live by when they face their own challenges in the days ahead. Let’s set a great example for them!

Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns. My email address is mizec@mineolaisd.net and I will respond to each question the very best that I can.

Our best always,

Update 4: Monday, March 16th at 2:30 p.m.

Good afternoon everyone,

Sorry for running behind on the update. We had a very productive meeting with our Cabinet this morning to discuss a variety of issues. We also participated as a group on a conference call that is being held daily by our Commissioner of Education, Mike Morath. Here are a few takeaways:

1.) Curbside pick-up for breakfast and lunch is fully operational. Any child 18 years or younger that resides in Mineola ISD can come pick up a meal for no charge. We are waiting on clarification from state officials for expanding these options by Wednesday with a delivery option for those who are in need.

2.) Campus Leadership Teams are meeting this week to develop plans for online learning to take place throughout the District starting Monday, March 23rd if we have not returned to school. More details as to what this will be like are coming soon.

3.) STAAR testing for the 2019-2020 school year has been cancelled by Government Abbott’s order.

4.) We will determine school opening or closure on Friday, March 20th at 12:00 noon for the following week.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Our very best,
Cody Mize
